Tidewater

This coast, from first light to last.

Book

What a day looks like

Flat, dark water under a pale sky before sunrise

06:00

First light

Flat, cold, and nobody else awake. We walk down from the north beach and get in while the water is still black.

A wide beach with the swell running and one figure at the waterline

10:00

The surffills in

By mid morning the swell is up. Beginners stay inside the bar, where the water is soft and the mistakes are cheap.

A dark cliff edge above white water on the headland path

15:00

Along thecliffs

The path climbs out of the village and holds the edge for an hour. On a clear day you can watch the swell lines arrive.

Two figures on the sand against the sun setting over the water

20:00

Last light

The wind drops and the water goes gold. Most people have gone home by now, which is more or less the point.

The four of us

Portrait of a guide holding a surfboard

Inês Carvalho

Grew up two streets from Ribeira d’Ilhas. Reads the bank before breakfast.

Portrait of a guide on the beach at sunset holding a board

Tomás Ferreira

Longboards and cliff paths. Walks the headland faster than most people drive it.

Portrait of a guide in a hooded wetsuit on the slipway, a wave breaking behind

Rita Salgueiro

Winter guide. Happiest when the forecast stops being reasonable.

What guests say

We booked the sunrise paddle once and ended up going three mornings running. Flat water, nobody else out.
Hannah R. / Bristol
I had never stood on a board. By the second hour I was up, and nobody made me feel like the slow one.
Ciaran D. / Dublin
The cliff walk is the part I did not expect to remember. It blew hard the whole way and we mostly stopped talking.
